Azolla Hydrogen is an Alberta based energy start-up with a focus on the North American hydrogen economy. We help companies transition from a default reliance on fossil fuels.
As we edge toward decarbonizing the energy sector, hydrogen as a transportation fuel has been gaining influence. Azolla Hydrogen has identified a pathway to generate low-GHG hydrogen that is scalable and not reliant on the power grid for electrolysis or fossil fuels for SMR.

Event
About 49 million years ago, the “Azolla Event” helped transform the planet from a greenhouse to the temperate climate we enjoy today. Sediments discovered in 2004 by the Arctic Coring Expedition found layers containing organic-rich layers filled with preserved Azolla— an aquatic fern. Analysis shows that azolla bloomed regularly for 800,000 years in the ancient arctic and sequestered enough biomass, as their remains sank to the bottom of the stagnant sea floor, to account for the CO2 drawdown of 3500 ppm to 600 ppm documented during this epoch. This period of carbon sequestration is known as the Azolla Event.
